The DB5_Drones.

At one point in the script the DB5 was required to deploy drones to take out Bond’s pusuers and clear the road ahead. We got as far as some SFX tests and a prototype 1:1 scale drone but then this scene was cut.

The 3D print/model-make was dressed onto the set of Q’s apartment.

The Drone

The concept was that the drones could be fired out of the DB5 like mortars, straight up into the air and open up and I was going for a very practical Q-Branch look and feel. They were to act like eyes in the sky and work in combination with Bond driving and navigating with an onboard system in conjunction with the built-in weapons onboard the DB5.

The DNA Facility

The initial thoughts for the DNA facility was that it was part of an old Russian operation that went wrong in a Chernobyl type of event. Bond would be forced to retrieve an undisclosed vial of DNA/toxin from the contaminated facility whilst trying to work out what the bigger plan was.

I started with Soviet Government types of building that would have been downtown and in plain sight and some sort of explosion had taken place in the past. This would have rendered the environment inhospitable for many years until now and one of the key features would have been that the facility would have been sealed and flooded, introducing another element of danger to Bond’s mission.

I tried changing the emphasis from the architecture being dominant and flooded to the environment being flooded with buildings within in - hence the flooded and damned valley with a facility/town hidden beneath it - the idea that the secret had been wiped off the face of the world and any contemporary maps.

I also began to explore a bolder approach to the design ideas as Mark and I started referencing all the great work Sir Ken Adam did over the years - in truth you can never get away from it on a Bond film! This also became linked to the Third Act in terms of design ideas as the production moved forward.
